The act of laying off entails adding cards to sets and runs that you or your opponents hfree spin and winave already laid down, whereas the act of melting involves using the cards in your hand to form sets & runs. Creating sets and runs with high-value cards should be your top priority when melding to get the most points possible. Also, if your opponent declares "Rummy," you can reduce your points by discarding low-value cards onto existing sets & runs.
