Daniel Negreanu will not defend his $50,000 Poker Players Championship crown after being knocked out of the event by none other than Phil Hellmuth.

Negreanu, who ended a decade-long bracelet drought when he won last year's event for $1,178,703, would see his tournament end on Day 3 this year, after the seventeen-time bracelet winner Hellmuth made a Queen-high flush to send Kid Poker to the rail.

The Poker Players Championship, one of the summer’s marquee events, is widely regarded as the ultimate mixed-game test. A stacked field remains in contention for the newly redesigned Chip Reese Memorial Trophy, the $1,331,322 first-place prize, and a WSOP gold bracelet. But the reigning champion won’t be among them.

With the game Pot-Limit Omaha, Negreanu would open to 42,000 from the button, and Hellmuth potted from the big blind, covering Negreanu, who had 80,000 behind. The Canadian would make the call to put his chances of winning an eighth bracelet in the balance.

Negreanu showed A1085, while Hellmuth tabled QQ105.

The flop ran out 587to give Negreanu two pair and pull ahead of Hellmuth, but the American would improve to a flush with 9on the turn. Negreanu would find no help on the river in the shape of the 3, and as he made his way from the table, could be heard telling his fellow Hall of Famer, “That beats me, nice hand, GG.”

The field is loaded with bracelet winners, including Hall of Fame hopeful Mike Matusow, Michael Mizrachi, Benny Glaser, who is chasing his fourth WSOP title of a remarkable summer, and, of course, Hellmuth himself.

A formidable figure currently stands at the top of the chip counts, in the form of Bryn Kenney, poker's all-time money list leader with over $77m in live tournament earnings. Fellow bracelet winners Ali Eslami and Christian Roberts also round out the podium spots at the current time of writing.
