It’s been a historic run for Leo Margets in this year’s WSOP Main Event, but unfortunately for the Spaniard and her loyal legion of supporters, that run has now come to an end.

Across nine days of play at Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas, Margets became the first woman in three decades to reach the final table of poker’s world championship, earning her place in the history books with a headline-grabbing run on the game’s biggest stage.

However, her tournament came to a close in 7th place for $1,500,000 after a brutal river card in a key pot against Kenny Hallaert ended her bid for the title.

Margets' historic run has attracted huge amounts of attention, with many of the game's greatest players voicing support. Women in Poker Hall of Famer Maria Ho called Margets’ final table appearance “incredible,” adding, “You are the moment!!!” Three-time GPI Female Player of the Year Kristen Foxen echoed the sentiment, calling Margets “a great ambassador for women in poker.”

Margets started Day 9 fifth in chips but slipped down the counts during a fast-paced afternoon inside a packed Event Center at Horseshoe Las Vegas.

PokerNews’David Salituro was on hand to capture the hand that brought her remarkable run to a close:

On Hand 28 of the day, Margets would limp in from the small blind before Hallaert moved all in from the big blind. Margets would lean back in her seat to take a moment, before calling for her last 39,600,000

Margets ran over to her rail to await the flop, which came J75. The Afell on the turn, sending the Spanish supporters into raptures, before the realization that Hallaert had picked up a flush draw washed over the crowd.

The river was the 9. Margets was turned away from the action and seemed stunned when she realized that Hallaert had made his flush. Hallaert immediately ran over to console her, as Margets' valiant and history-making run came to an end in seventh place.

She left the Event Center at Horseshoe Las Vegas to a standing ovation from all sides of the room, collecting $1,500,000 - the largest score ever recorded by a woman in the WSOP Main Event.

"The Experience of My Life"

Speaking to PokerNews'Sharilyn Vera, Margets said she had "goosebumps" as she reflected on her deep run, calling it “the experience of my life.”

“I’ve enjoyed every single hand I’ve played. It’s been amazing.”

“Such an amazing nine days,” she said. “It’s hard to express with words. It’s been so emotional, but at the same time, you have to recompose every time you’re at the table.”

The WSOP bracelet winner also spoke about the wave of support she received throughout the tournament. “But to be honest, the support, I could feel it... Some of my best friends were here and I was feeling their support.”

As for what comes next, Margets said she plans to relax after the long grind of the Main Event. “Immediately next, [I'm] going to chill with my friends. I want to be with them today.” After that, she’s flying home to “chill for a month.”
